Archaeological investigations have mainly related to building surveys of cotton mills of varying periods, at Slackcote Mill, Gem Mill, and Greenfield Mill, ahead of redevelopment. The site of the 1730 Andrew Mill in Greenfield was open area excavated, revealing the transformation of this site from a woollen mill into cotton spinning and weaving through the 19th century.

Test pitting and palaeoenvironmental analysis also took place on blanket peat affected by the proposed wind farm at Denshaw (for which permission was refused), to look for evidence of prehistoric activity. GMAU also commented on several historic townscape studies for Housing Market Renewal areas.
