The Chapel Wharf development site behind the Lowry Hotel in the city centre uncovered a regionally important assemblage of early post medieval pottery, the physical remains of the boundary of the medieval borough, burgage plot ditches, early post medieval infill and a late 18th century block of back to back dwellings.

In Monton near Eccles, three pieces of archaeological excavations were undertaken on adjacent development plots at Chorlton Fold Farm site. These revealed a late medieval ditch and associated pottery, evidence for medieval iron smelting, and several 16th and 17th century structures and pits.


An archaeological survey of the grade 2 timber framed Monks Hall in Eccles found evidence of medieval origins. This survey will be used to inform sympathetic refurbishment of the site for apartments.

For the industrial period, well preserved remains of a c1820 dyeworks and workers’ housing were recorded at Adelphi Street beside the river Irwell, with a regionally important assemblage of clay pipes.
